Today I bought my third Timex Expedition Combo. I got my first one six years ago and have yet to find another watch with the functions I want for the same price.

I've used the alarm to wake me up, the countdown timer when cooking, the second time display when overseas, the stopwatch for timing animal immobilisation and the hands as a makeshift compass. The Indiglo light is pretty nifty too and I've used it on more than one occasion to help locate a torch or candles in the dark during a power cut.

My previous two Expeditions had pretty hard lives, always getting knocked about, submerged and frequently exposed to dust and mud, but they kept going, mechanically at least. The face cover is also pretty thick and resilient. My first one only got pitted because I stupidly wore it while welding and then I accidently broke it months later by tapping it too hard with an ankus. The digital part was already playing up by then (see below), so it was already on its way out.
The strap usually lasted a fair few months before the stitching rotted (sweat) and/or ripped where it joins the timepiece. I have a cheap, comfortable and durable backup velcro strap I use for this eventuality.

The biggest problem I find with these watches is that bending the wrist back (when pushing things, for example) sometimes presses the bottom left button. After a couple of years or so, the button sticks in and the digital display becomes inoperable. This can be fixed temporarily, but it will start to happen again and again. My most recent attempt to fix this problem resulted in the last watch's demise.
Another minor quibble I have is that the display shows the date in US style only, that is: mm - dd, which I find slightly annoying.

Even with these complaints I still think it's a great watch and will continue to buy them until I find something better at a similar price.
Also, I have quite thin wrists and the timepiece is of such a size that it doesn't look huge on me!

5 out of 5 stars Elegant, great build quality, nice feature set and not complicated at all to operate: what could you ask more at this price???   February 12, 2010

First things first: I must tell you that, actually, I have been a longtime Casio fan for 20 years, and I have always been using their DataBank watches, because I could not do without their incredibly useuful functions (have you ever wanted to remember/store a PIN code, a password, a phone number, an address or an appointment _without_ your cel phone or an agenda, anyone....?)

Anyway, I always loved also classic watches, too, of course, and I always wanted to have also some "alternative" watch available, to use it at special occasions, when I would not need my trustworthy data-bank.

Problem was, I did not want to spend a fortune on a classic watch, that would certainly also grab the attention of muggers, pickpockets, etc.; so, I wanted an inexpensive, but classy, analogue-digital watch that could offer at least a good build quality, alarm, chronograph and dual-time functions, and a proper illumination. (For all those times when you need to check the time and other functions in the dark: for instance, when you find yourself asking when that boring, unoriginal, overlong movie - that you did not really even _want_ to watch - is going to end...).

Luckily, in recent times classic watches with elegant design, nice build quality and lots of features have become really affordable: so, here enters Timex, with its long list of Expedition models, many of which including the features I needed. (By the way, the very first watch I had when I was a child was a Timex, so this name brought a lot of nice memories to me....)

This specific model, particularly, seemed to have it all: analogue and digital, several alarms, dual-time and chronograph functions, the BEAUTIFUL Indiglo lighting system, that completely lights up the face of the watch in the dark (a surefire attention-grabber for people that never saw it, and a very elegant way to illuminate an analogue dial, by the way...), and, most importantly, a very stylish and classy look, even for a sport watch.

By the way, please note that the leather band and buckle are actually much _more_ elegant and classy than they look in the picture! The "E(xpedition)" engraved logo and the stitched, water-resistant leather are _extremely_ pleasant and nice to the touch, and lend an air of expensiveness to a really inexpensive watch.

By the way, regarding the digital functions and the use of the button settings, I read some other comments that deemed them almost "impossible" to use, or too complicated, but actually I can assure you that, if you have ever used _any_ digital watch with multiple functions and more than a single pushbutton, you will probably be able to set and use all the functions of this watch in very few minutes without even having to look at the manual (as I did, I just needed to check how to reset the chrono times and switch between lap and total time...)

The placement of multiple functions is extremely intuitive (lower right to set times (holding) and stopping/resetting counters, lower left to choose functions/change settings/resume chrono from split times, upper left for light and upper right for starting/change settings.

The alarm/chime is quite strong, while the movement of the watch (so far) is barely audible, luckily (I hate noisy watches or clocks).

The beefy manual, anyway, clarifies any doubts: by the way, regarding the manual, please note that it includes instructions for _all sorts and models_ of Timex watches, so you just need to read the first pages related to this specific one and completely ignore the others, of course...

Finally, I have also read other comments regarding durability issues with the buttons or the functions of the watch; well, actually, you should keep in mind that _any_ digital watch with several buttons is prone to button jamming due to dirt, sweat, etc., penetrating into the buttons.

All you can do is keep your watch as clean as possible, especially during summer, and I often use cotton sticks and isopropyl alcohol for that (except for the band, of course...); by the way, please note that usually you need to _open_ the watch to properly clean the buttons, and you would most likely recover any functions until the next cleanup, unless they are corroded, of course.

I must say that I was extremely (and even surprisingly) satisfied by this watch, and I would certainly recommend it to anybody, especially given the incredibly little price! What could you possibly ask more? Even if it breaks in a year or two, it would not harm your wallet a lot, don't you think?

5 out of 5 stars Best for time zones   January 14, 2009

I have been doing a lot of travelling across time zones and wanted a watch that allowed clear view of time locally and at home (only way to get head grounded in first few days away). I was prepared to pay high prices and had lots for dual dial watches etc. I have found this watch the best for this application. Backlight is excellent for night flights. Dual time is clear and can be set to 24hr clock - nothing worse than confusion on whether it is 3am or 3pm at home: and can be easily reversed on return home. Altogether a really neat design which is best I have had for dual time.

This watch is one of my favourites! At first it takes 15minutes or there abouts to set up, and once it's set up it is a beautiful piece of work. It can take a beating but it doesn't give up.

The Indiglo face is genius! Instead of, on a lot of watches, having a feeble and weak led light in the corner that doesn't spread very well across the face of the dial, however Timex does it, they make the greenish light illuminate the WHOLE of the dial. very useful.

The combination of a digital and analogue watch together, at first seems strange, but the digital chronograph leaves the face uncluttered and in my opinion is a very smart way of organising the space. Battery life length, I don't notice any difference to a standard watch. My one's been running on the initial battery for years!

The strap, does feel weird for the first week, and can be very stiff. But once it has settled in on your wrist it is one of the most comfy things I can imagine. The watch isn't weighty so it doesn't feel like you continuously have to heave up a massive weight, like some watches I've had. One criticism, the second band that keeps the strap secure (on the underside of the wrist) on mine has broken off, but the strap has 'learnt' the natural curvature so this isn't a problem really.

Also water resistant to 50m, not had a chance to try it at anywhere near that depth so i can't on how well it performs.

The count up and count down timers are very useful. (Especially in exams! it has saved my back so often, I owe so much to this watch)

This watch has given me a lot of faithful service and i do not intend on exchanging it for anything soon. It is too good. Does everything that i want it to. :)

Saw an older version of this watch (without the digital time)on a friends wrist and liked the look of it. He'd had it for years and it had proved very robust, waterproof in the shower and reliable. I like timepieces but am not wealthy, and this watch is to me an excellent combination or looks, function, comfort and 'bang for buck'. As with all really good watches it 'disappears' into your life/wrist and becomes a part of you. Its not too heavy or bulky; it's not flashy or over complicated, just a very goodloking and comfortable watch. Oh and if you are a little longsighted like me the clock face is really clear. Enjoy.
